Although some cultures have interesting cultural beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth, the German culture really interested me and enticed me enough to go ahead and learn all about the traditions. In Germany, women are not given the privacy needed during regular examinations as many of us may be used to. During regular OB/GYN appointments, to check on the woman and the baby, the woman is not given the option of a medical gown to wear while getting an ultrasound or sonogram, and the appointment will most likely be in a room with a few other women who are also being checked on. Once you are confirmed to be pregnant, the mother- to- be will receive a “Mutterpass” booklet to keep track of all examinations and everything having to do with your pregnancy. There is a requirement of 12 examinations during a pregnancy, but if you pass your due date, you must go every day following the estimated delivery date.
